Get to know the material

## From sandstone to statement stone.

Quartzite is a natural rock formed when quartz-rich sandstone is transformed by geological heat and pressure. Its quartz grains recrystallize and lock together, producing a hard, durable stone.

The attraction is more than strength. A full slab can reveal quiet ribbons, sweeping bands, or bold mineral contrasts. Choosing quartzite means choosing the individual stone, with its own color, movement, and character.

[How does it compare with quartz? →](https://www.carlosstonepro.com/en-us/quartzite-slabs-pompano-beach#compare)

01

### Natural individuality

View the actual slab before selecting. A small sample cannot show the full composition.

02

### Hard quartz grains

Quartzite is valued for hardness. Protect the surface with cutting boards and trivets.

03

### Care matched to the stone

Absorption varies. Ask your supplier and fabricator about sealing and everyday care.

These slabs share a material name, yet their visible colors and movement differ. Use the name as a starting point; select the actual slab with Carlos and your fabricator. Lighting and screens can also affect how colors appear.

Similar names. Different materials.

## Quartzite vs. quartz: what is the difference?

Quartz is a mineral. Quartzite is a natural rock rich in that mineral. The quartz sold for countertops is an engineered surface.

| What to compare | Natural quartzite | Engineered quartz |
| --- | --- | --- |
| How it is made | Quarried rock, cut into slabs and finished. | Manufactured using mineral particles, resin binders, pigments, and other ingredients. |
| The look | Natural variation; select the actual slab. | Designed patterns; appearance varies by brand and collection. |
| Sealing | May benefit from sealing, depending on absorption and treatment. | Generally does not require sealing; follow the manufacturer’s care guide. |
| Heat | Use trivets to protect the finished surface. | Direct heat can damage the surface. Use trivets. |
| Best starting point | You love the individuality of natural stone. | You want engineered design options and care without routine sealing. |

**Still deciding between the two?**Compare the actual materials and care expectations for your project.

A little geology, a lot of character

## Three things you might not know about quartzite.

The transformation

### It began as sand.

Sand became sandstone; later heat and pressure transformed the rock. Recrystallization made the quartz grains tightly intergrown.

The mineral story

### Color adds clues.

Quartzite is often white or gray. Additional minerals can introduce other colors. A photograph alone cannot identify the minerals in a particular slab.

A geological clue

### The break tells a story.

Quartzite grains become so tightly joined that the rock can fracture across them. Sandstone tends to break around its grains instead.

Everyday living

## Beautiful stone. Practical habits.

A care plan should fit the specific slab, finish, and any treatments. Ask for written care instructions before installation.

1. ### Clean gently.

Use a soft cloth and a suitable gentle cleaner. Wipe up spills promptly.
2. ### Protect the finish.

Use coasters, cutting boards, and trivets for hot cookware.
3. ### Discuss sealing.

Confirm whether sealing is needed and when to reassess it. There is no single resealing schedule for every quartzite.

Before you choose

## Good questions. Clear answers.

Start with how you live, the look you love, and the actual stone you are considering.

Is quartzite a good choice for a kitchen island?

It can be. Review the individual slab, care needs, and layout with Carlos and your fabricator. Full slab viewing helps you decide where prominent veins might fall across an island or backsplash.

Does quartzite need sealing?

Some quartzites benefit from sealing more than others. Absorption, finish, and existing treatments matter. Ask your supplier and fabricator for guidance for your specific stone.

Can quartzite stain or get damaged?

Yes. Hardness does not make a finished surface immune to staining or damage. Prompt spill cleanup and the appropriate care routine remain important.

Why should I see a full slab instead of only a sample?

Full slabs show the scale and direction of the pattern. Bring cabinet, flooring, and backsplash samples so you can compare the materials together.

Is a stone sold as “soft quartzite” the same thing?

Trade names can be inconsistent, and some marble or other stones are sold under quartzite names. Ask for material identification and performance information. Appearance alone does not establish the stone’s geology.

How do I check quartzite pricing and availability?

Contact Carlos with the material you like, approximate dimensions, project location, and timeline. Confirm the actual slabs, thickness, finish, and quote before making a decision.

Do you fabricate or install countertops?

Carlos provides slab selection and sales support as an authorized ST Stones sales representative. Measuring, fabrication, and installation are handled by your chosen fabricator.
